Finding my feet
Unfortunately, the fallacy that the night before you are due to start your training contract, the ‘knowledge fairy’ will visit you and you will start your journey as a Trainee Solicitor with the complete understanding and experience of your first seat, is sadly just that: a fallacy. Although, I’m still holding out hope!
It is said that the first few months of a training contract can be the most challenging, not quite the glamorised ‘Suits’ episode that I pictured in my head (regrettably no handsome Harvey Spector to swoop in and save the day).
Even though I have worked in the Wills and Probate department (my first seat) at Baxter Harries for the past year and a half as a Legal Secretary, the fear of the unknown caused by taking on a new and different role was significant.
One week in and I am slowly acclimatising to the change in my role. I am really enjoying the challenges and opportunities that come with being a trainee such as drafting documents myself and getting to sit in on client meetings (daunting that I will soon be having client meetings of my own).
I hope that over the coming weeks I will be able to gain more confidence in my work and learn to appreciate that everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are a trainee! Join me on my journey as I embark on life as a Trainee Solicitor.
