Welcoming our newest recruit
Posted by CraigTipper - February 02 2017
Meet our newest recruit, Joanne Thomas, a solicitor who specialises in dealing with all aspects of private family law matters, particularly high value and complex financial matters arising from the breakdown of a relationship.
We asked Joanne some questions about why she became a lawyer:
What attracted you to a career in law?
I wanted to pursue a career that was intellectually challenging and personally fulfilling, so a career in law seemed the obvious choice.
Why become a solicitor and not barrister?
Deciding which direction to take your legal career is an important decision for all those who aspire to have a career in law, but I decided quite early on in to my legal studies that the solicitor route was the right one for me.
Being a solicitor means that I work with client’s from day one right through to the end of their matter. This means I am able to develop and maintain strong working relationships with my clients, which is something that barristers do not always get the opportunity to do because they do not deal with matters on a day to day basis, and due to diary commitments or other circumstances, are not always able to represent clients at every court hearing.
What do you enjoy most about being a family solicitor?
There is no doubt that being a family lawyer is stressful at times. It is a demanding area of law that requires hard work and emotional resilience. However, being able to use the legal skills and knowledge that I have acquired during my legal studies and work experience to help people resolve matters following the breakdown of a relationship (which is no doubt one of the most emotional and difficult times in a person’s life), or to plan for the future with their partner makes it all worthwhile.
I also like the fact that my work is quite varied because not every client wishes to achieve the same outcome, and often there are unique or complex legal issues to be resolved. This means that I am constantly learning and developing, so there is no risk of getting bored!
Away from the office, I am keen horse rider and in my youth competed in national show jumping competitions across the country. Although nowadays I do not ride as much as I would like, I am still an avid equine enthusiast and follow the show jumping as much as I can. I also enjoy going to the gym and travelling to see the wonders of the world.
If you are considering separation or divorce, or making plans with your partner for your future together, and require help or advice, please do get in touch with Joanne who will be happy to help.
