My journey to becoming a District Judge

My journey to becoming a District Judge

Posted by JadeEatherton - March 08 2018

I was brought up in a council house in Coventry.  My family were working class and my parents worked in a factory. I did moderately well at school.  I was the first of my family to go to University – I was one of the very few from my estate to do so.  I was interested in law and found a place in Chelmsford.  I moved to Essex where I have lived since.

In 1984 I graduated in Law from Chelmer Institute, Chelmsford (now Anglia Ruskin University) not sure of whether to become a Solicitor or Barrister and so decided to work as a legal executive to gain further experience.  I joined Hammersmith Council as a legal executive, then joined Westminster Council qualifying as FILEX at the age of 25.    I went on to qualify as a Solicitor joining private practice in 1992.

I have accreditations with the Law Society for Personal Injury and I am on the Children Law Panel. I have considerable expertise with progressing child abuse claims as well as an Advocate in family and civil law cases.

I was formerly Partner and latterly the sole practitioner of MWP Solicitors. MWP merged with Baxter Harries Solicitors on 1 October 2017. The merger with Baxter Harries was a really positive move because of the years of experience of MWP joined with the expertise of the team at Baxter Harries.

I have really enjoyed my time as part of the team at Baxter Harries and I am certain that Baxter Harries will go from strength to strength in view of their commitment to provide an exemplary but sensitive service to clients with family issues.

I became a Deputy District Judge in 2013.  The strength and depth of knowledge I gained throughout my years as a Solicitor provided me with the experience and expertise required for a Judicial post.

I am looking forward to my new career but I am really sad to be leaving the friendly team at Baxter Harries Ltd. I wish Baxter Harries Ltd every success for the future.
