Dementia Awareness Week 21 – 27 MAY 2018

Dementia Awareness Week 21 – 27 MAY 2018

Posted by JadeEatherton - May 17 2018

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, an estimated 850,000 people in the UK today suffer from dementia and by 2025 the figure is likely to be over 1 million. Dementia is a worldwide problem, but is most often seen in the wealthiest countries, like ours, where people live longest.

All of us know somebody or know of somebody who is sadly afflicted with some form of dementia and have seen the practical difficulties and the heartache that this can bring. The law cannot cure dementia or help manage its symptoms. However, it can offer peace of mind about some important things.

Firstly, making a Will means that you can have certainty that your family and other loved ones are properly provided for after you pass away.

Secondly, making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) means that you know that somebody you trust will be making decisions about you and your financial affairs when you no longer have the capacity to do those things yourself.

You can only make a Will or LPA if you understand what you are doing and the implications of it. So, for someone diagnosed with dementia, it is imperative that they take these steps early on. If they lose capacity, the only option is to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputy to be appointed to manage their property and affairs. This can be an expensive and time-consuming process which can cause added stress to family members who are trying to sort things out.

None of us knows what is around the corner. Hopefully, long-term health and happiness. However, to give yourself and your loved ones peace of mind for the future make a Will and an LPA NOW! – whatever your age and state of health – and encourage your family and friends to do the same.
